Instinctive characteristic
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said: “Five of the innate characteristics are: circumcision, shaving one’s
pubic hair; plucking out one’s armpit hair; clipping one’s nails and trimming
one’s moustache.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Prohibition of using the right hand for cleaning one’s private parts
Abu Qatadah reported that the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him) said: “When one of you drinks, he should not breath in he glass;
when he goes to lavatory, he should neither touch nor clean his privates with
his right hand.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
The right of the road
Abu Saeed Al Khadri reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) said: “Beware of sitting on the pavements of the road.” People around
him then said: “We cannot help it. they are where we hold our conversations.”
The Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “If you cannot it, then give asked: “What is the
right of the road?” The Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) replied: “Casting down one’s eyes,
refraining form doing anything harmful, answering a greeting, enjoining the good
and forbidding the evil.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Who should start greeting?
Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him) said: “The one who is riding should greet the one who is walking
should greet the one who is sitting and the few should greet the many.” (Bukhari
& Muslim)
The due right of a Muslim over another
Abu Hurairah reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) sayings:
“A Muslim had five due rights over another: Answering a greeting, visiting the
ill, joining a funeral, accepting an invitation and giving blessings to a
sneezer.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Prohibition of two people whispering to each other in presence of a third person
Abduallah bin Masud reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “If you are
three people and two of you want to talk, they should never whisper to each
other in the presence of the third person. They should wait until they mix with
more people so that will not upset him.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Avoidance of picking up harmful things out of the way
Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger (p.b.b.u.h) said: “While a man was
walking in a street, he came a cross a thorny branch, picked it up and put it
away. Consequently, Allah forgave his sins as a reward.” (Bukhari & Musilm)
Not to preach too often for too long
Ibn Masud reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) used to be very considerate in
choosing the time for giving us religious exhortation because he did not want to
bore us.” (Bukhari)
Praising one another
Abu Bakrah reported that as a man was praising another in the presence of the
Prophet (p.b.b.u.h), the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “Woe is you! You have killed
your friend, you had better say: I regard this person as so and so and Allah
knows best’, provided that you know that it is true what you say of him.”
(Bukhari)
Manners in greeting
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “The one who is riding
should greet the who is walking; the one who is walking should greet the one who
is sitting; the few should greet the many and the young should greet the old.”
(Bukhari)
Watching one’s tongue and protecting one’s private parts against unlawful things
Sahel bin Saed reported that the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) said: “I
guarantee Paradise for anyone who controls what’s between his two jawbones (i.e.
his tongue) and what is between his legs (i.e. his private parts).” (Bukhari)
Washing one’s hands after waking up
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “When you wake up in
the morning, do not dip your hands in the container until you wash them three
times. You never know where they might have been while you were asleep.”
(Muslim)
Prohibition of answering the call of nature in the streets
Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) said: “Avoid the
two accursed.” The companions then asked: “Oh Messenger of Allah, What are
they?” The Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) replied: “It is he who answers the call of nature
in people’s way or were they normally rest (e.g. parks).” (Muslim)
Right of hospitality
Abu Shuraih Al-Khuzai reported that the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) said:
“The period of showing hospitality to a guest lasts for three days, during the
first of which the host should be as hospitable as he could. However, a guest
should not stay with someone to the extent that the host would feel guilty.” The
people around the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) then asked: “How come the host feels
guilty? The Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) replied: “The host might run out of food and
have nothing to offer to his guest.” (Muslim)
Using a sharp blade when slaughtering an animal
Shaddad bin Aws reported that he learned two things from the Messenger
(p.b.b.u.h) saying: “Allah has ascribed benevolence (Ihsan) to everything.
Therefore, if you want to kill and animal for food, kill it properly and gently,
and you want to slaughter an animal, do it gently and with a very sharp knife so
that it will be comfortable for the animal being slaughtered.” (Muslim)
Making mention of Allah when Entering one’s home or eating
Jaber bin Abdullah reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h)
saying: “If a man makes mention of Allah’s Name as he enters his home or when he
eats, the devil will say to his fellow devils: you have got neither
accommodation nor food tonight’; whereas if he enters his home without making
mention of Allah’s Name, the devil will say to his fellow evils; you have got
accommodation tonight’ and if he does not make mention of Allah’s Name as he
eats, the devil will say to his fellow devils: You have got both accommodation
and food.” (Muslim)
Eating with the right hand
Ibn Omar reported that the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) said: “When you eat,
eat with your right hand; when you drink, hold your drink with your right hand.
For the devil eats with his left hand and holds his drink with his left hand.”
(Muslim)
Saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ after one eats or drinks makes Allah pleased with him
Anas bin Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (p.b.b.u.h) said: “Allah
becomes pleased with a servant who says ‘alhamdulillah’ (praise be to Allah)
after he eats or drinks.” (Muslim)
Allah’s favourite names
Ibn Omar reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “Allah’s favourite names
are: Abdullah and Abdul Rahman.” (Muslim)
The Most despicable name of Allah
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “The name most despised
by Allah is a man calling himself the ‘King of kings’. Sufyan bin Oyaynah said:
like the ‘Shah of Shahs’.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Prohibition against asking someone to give up his seat for someone else to sit
Ibn Omar reported that the Prophet (p.b.b.u.h) said: “A man must not ask another
to give up his seat for him to sit but rather make room for one another.” Ibn
Omar used to deline a seat given up especially for him.” (Muslim)
