We must defend our Prophet ( peace be upon him ). We send out this call to
Muslims of all walks of life, especially the scholars and students of knowledge
among them. It is sad to see how read Muslims are to passionately defend their
sheikhs and their symbols, yet they ignore this affront to this most important
person around whom all Muslims unite.
They shrug this matter off saying that it is a waste of time responding to the
unbelievers. They ask: What do we expect from those people anyway ?
This is not the attitude to have. Our pure and perfect religion was sent to all
the people of the world. Our primary goal, in fact, is to convey the Message of
the Prophet (peace be upon him) to them. He commanded us to do so, saying: (
Convey from me even a single verse.)
The doubts being cast right now are not about some small, secondary matter of
our faith, but about the very person who conveyed that faith to us. It is a
direct attack on the very foundations of Islam.
We must unite our efforts. We must follow their activities and their
declarations in the news, in their meetings, and on their websites. We must
respond to them and counter every one of their ideas with one of ours. We must
combat falsehood with truth.
We must establish websites in their own languages to refute their misconceptions
and specious arguments in a learned, objective manner. We must challenge them to
produce their evidence for their false claims.
We must mobilize ourselves right now. We cannot make our scholars and students
of knowledge shoulder all of the responsibility. We must all work together. Each
of us must play his part. Some people will have ideas to offer. Others will scan
their websites and publications, seeking out their false claims. Others will
translate their articles so that the scholars and students of knowledge will be
able to read them, so that their allegations can be countered objectively and
not emotionally. Other people will have to act as liaisons between the various
Islamic organizations and Muslim leaders to make sure their efforts complement
each another.
We cannot forget the role to be played by the Muslim communities in the West
through their mosques and assemblies. They need to be in contact with the rest
of the Muslims so that each person will be able to carry a valuable role.
We will need to issue declarations endorsed by our scholars all the various
Islamic organizations.
This in and of itself is a display of unity, even if we continue to disagree in
subsidiary matters. This is a matter of paramount importance. We must come
together to deal with it.
