Iblis was created of FIRE and mankind ( Adam ) was created of clay. When Allah created Adam he commanded the angels to bow down before him. All prostrated themselves except for Iblis , who refused thus disobeying Allah's command.
In the book by Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips titled: Ibn Taymeeyah's essay on " THE JINNS ( Demons ) " saying.... In the Islamic literature Shaytaan ( Eng. Satan, devil ) is a name given to disbelieving Jinn. They are created from Fire according to Allah's statement in Qur'an; The Jinns were created from the fire of scorching wind. [ 15:27 ] They are not fallen angels as angels are made from LIGHT according to the following statement of Prophet Muhammad (saaw )narrated by his wife Aisha (r.a.) : " The angels were created from light and Jinns from fiery wind ." [ Sahih Muslim ] and angels could not disobey God according to Allah's statement in Qur'an, " angels stern and severe, who do not obey Allah in what he orders them, but do whatever they are commanded. [ 66:6 ]
And ( remember ) when We said to the angels: ' Prostrate yourselves before Adam". And they prostrated except Iblis, he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers ( disobedient to Allah ).' [ 2:34 ]
( Allah ) said: " O Iblis! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands . Are you too proud ( to fall prostrate to Adam ) or are you one of the high exalted? " [38:75 ]
Iblis said : " I am better than he, You created me from fire, and you created him from clay ." [ 38:76 ]
( Allah ) said: " Then get out from here, for verily you are outcast ( Rajim )." [ 38:77 ]
And verily! My Curse is on you till the Day of Recompense." [ 38:78 ]
Iblis said: " My Lord , give me then respite till the Day the ( dead ) are resurrected." [ 38:79 ]
( Allah ) said: " Verily! You are of those allowed respite till the Day of the time appointed . " [ 38:80-81 ]
Iblis said: " By Your Might, then surely I will mislead them all, except Your chosen slaves amongst them ( faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism )." [ 3:82-83 ]
( Allah ) said: " The Truth is, and the Truth I say,---that I will fill Hell with you ( Iblis ) and those of them ( mankind ) that follow you , together. " [ 38:84-85 ]
And so Allah said : " And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise , and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be the Zalimun ( unjust and wrong-doers ). Then Satan whispered suggestion to them both ( Adam and his wife ) in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts ( before ): he said: " Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals". And he ( Iblis ) swore by Allah to them both (saying ): " Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both." [ 7:19-21 ]
' So he ( Iblis ) misled them with deception. Then when they tasted the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame ( private parts ) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves ( in order to cover their shame ). And their Lord called out to them saying: " DID I NOT FORBID YOU THAT THREE AND TELL YOU: " Verily Satan is an open enemy to you ?" [ 7:22 ]
Iblis even blamed Allah by saying:" O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them ( mankind ) on the earth, and I shall misled them all. " [ 15:39 ]
But Allah said: " Certainly you have no authority over My Slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawin ( Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers,etc. ) " [ 15:42 ]
